Alan Hollingsworth and his partner Gray Patterson had encouraged residents of Morton Fendle to invest in a craft centre at the local mill. Patterson has fallen out with Hollingsworth and tells the villagers that the mill is to close and they will lose their money.

Barnaby investigates and finds Hollingsworth paralytically drunk. Although Hollingsworth doesn’t tell Barnaby, Barnaby deduces that Hollingworth’s wife, Simone, has been kidnapped. Barnaby has Troy watch Hollingsworth’s house from a neighbour’s house. The neighbour, Reg Buckley, was treasurer for the mill and has form for embezzlement. His daughter, Brenda Buckley is in love with Hollingsworth, but Hollingsworth is trying to shake her off.

Hollingsworth manages to leave the village by getting Troy to the phone whilst he drives off. He goes to town and leaves ransom money in the market. Unfortunately Brenda has followed him and sees the money collected. On the way home Brenda’s car is forced off the road and under a parked lorry trailer, killing her instantly. The car involved is traced to a former boyfriend of Simone Hollingsworth, Vince Perry.

Simone Hollingsworth’s only friend is Sarah Lawton. Barnaby and Troy break into her home to investigate, but get caught when Sarah Lawton returns. They discover that Simone and Sarah had a lesbian relationship.

Alan Hollingsworth is found dead. He has drunk whisky laced with pills. The pills would normally have been in capsules, the murderer has meticulously emptied them into the whisky. At his cottage Barnaby finds photos of Simone as a hostage. There is a deck chair in the background. Troy breaks into Sarah Lawton’s cottage for a second time and discovers the deckchair in an attic. A little later Simone re-appears, dumped on Barnaby’s door step.

Barnaby gets a lead when a neighbour of Hollingsworth, ex actress Elfrida Molfrey, tells Barnaby that Simone was an expert make up artist. Bruises to Simones face in the kidnap photos had been make up. The kidnap was a hoax to extort money from Alan Hollingsworth. The plot was hatched between Perry, Simone Hollingsworth and Sarah Lawton.

Lawton had been convinced that Alan Hollingsworth had been beating Simone, and she killed him for it. The bruises were again make up. Simone and Perry had conned Sarah Lawton. Lawton didn’t believe Barnaby and took the total blame for the deaths, leaving Simone and Perry to go free. Troy visits Lawton in prison some time later and shows her photos of Simone’s marriage to Perry and Simone’s new lesbian lover. Lawton decides to give evidence against Simone and Perry.
