Venus De Cello was featured in the Castlegar Sculpture Walk in 2012 and was one of the winners for Artistic Merit Awards.
Peter Vogelaar is a well-known sand and ice sculptor and has now branched out into granite.
He previously completed a winning sand sculpture and liked the concept of using a musical instrument for the torso of the female figure. When it was completed it reminded Vogelaar of that famous painting and thus the pun: Venus De Cello.
We first saw this last year at the Castlegar Sculpture Walk and we were so amused that we could not help chuckling out loud, causing raised eyebrows of passersby: Tourists!
We were very surprised and pleased to see it again and that it is now on display in Nelson.
