Austin is and always has been a bike town -- even before the now-disgraced TDF rider Lance Armstrong moved here. With 50,000 students at the University of Texas, if you are under 25 you are frequently traveling by bike.
When Mama Blaster was a student at UT in the 1980s, I had a quadruple hand-me down 10-speed that I rode all over campus and down to Town Lake and through downtown. There were few bike routes, then - we took our chances on the roads with the cars!! Now there is a whole network with dedicated bike lanes and everything to keep cyclists safe :)
