After the new cemetery was opened in 1870 this cemetery became known as Gamla Kyrkogården which is The Old Cemetery in English.
These days the only burials allowed are for families that have a plot in the cemetery. There are approximately 500 graves in the cemetery.
The cemetery is now registered as a Swedish listed building in order to preserve it from development. It is well maintained and laid out with paths and many mature trees and is used a a public amenity and garden area right in the centre of the city.
