Charlemagne is rightfully called the "Father of Europe", because he was able to unite Europe for the first time after the end of the Roman Empire. Son of Pepin the Short, King of the Franks, Charlemagne expanded his father's rule to include much of modern day Europe. He fought against the Moor's in Spain, subdued the Bavarians, conquered Italy, and overcame the Slavs in central Europe.
He was not only a military giant, he was also renowned for his organizational skills, as well as putting place many economic and educational reforms. It was on December 25, 800 that he received the ultimate reward for all he had done when Pope Leo III crowned him Holy Roman Emperor.
His death on January 28, 814 at the age of 71 was a time of great mourning throughout all of Europe. A tall man for his times, standing just over six feet tall, he was a man who made a great impact on history, and is revered even today.
