Text of the plaque mounted on the side of the Bytown Bridges:
On September 8, 2005, the new Bytown Bridges were opened by Her Exellency the Right Hounourable Adrienne Clarkson, C.C., C.M.W., C.O.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada.
The Bytown Bridges are part of the Confederation Boulevard ceremonial route in Canada's Capital. They were built by the City of Ottawa in partnership with the National Capital Commission.

Les nouveaux ponts Bytown ont été inaugurés le 8 septembre 2005 par Son Excellence, la très honorable Adrienne Clarkson, C.C., C.M.W., C.O.M., C.D., Gouverneur générale du Canada.
Les ponts Bytown font partie du boulevard de la Confédération parcours d’honneur de la capitale du Canada. Ils ont été érigés par la ville d’Ottawa en partenariat avec la Commission de la capitale nationale.
The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson

"Born in Hong Kong in 1939, Madame Clarkson came to Canada as a refugee with her family, during the war in 1942. She received her early education in the Ottawa public school system and later obtained an Honours B.A. and an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Toronto. She also did post-graduate work at the Sorbonne in France and became fluently bilingual.
A leading figure in Canada's cultural life, Madame Clarkson had a rich and distinguished career in broadcasting, journalism, the arts and the public service. During her career Madame Clarkson received numerous prestigious awards both in Canada and abroad in recognition for her outstanding contribution in professional and charitable endeavours. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1992, and upon her appointment as Governor General in 1999, she became Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order of Canada.
Madame Clarkson was the 26th Governor General of Canada from October 7, 1999 to September 27, 2005."

The Bytown Bridges
"The Bytown Bridges carry Sussex Drive over two branches of the Rideau River in Ottawa's central core, and as such represent a vital link within the city's transportation network.
A crossing has existed at the site since 1846. In 1954, two three-span structures had been constructed, and these represented one of the first uses of precast prestressed concrete girders in Canada.
Both bridges had been rehabilitated over the following decades, but by 2001 their superstructures had deteriorated to the point where they had to be replaced."
