Statues of Saint John of Nepomuk are found on many bridges in this part of Europe. He is portrayed here as he usually is, cross in hand and head encircled that were overhead when he was tortured and thrown into the Vltava river. The situation arose where King Wenceslaus wanted an ally to be appointed an Abbott, but John of Nepomuk appointed the person preferred by the the Pope. Consequently Wenceslaus had him tortured and killed. Almost immediately after his death he became a saint.
