The first Carolingian King, co-ruled with his brother Carloman, until Carloman entered the religious life, at which time he became the sole ruler of the Franks. Was a strong supporter of the papacy, and with the aid of Pope Zachary had himself proclaimed King of the Franks in 751. Fought many wars to expand his rule, but died in 768 with subjugating the Germans. While he is remembered in his own right, his greatest accomplishment was to have sired his son, Charlemagne, who forever changed the face of Europe and history.
