Some worldwide events and accomplishments that occurred during Pearl's time on earth:

1898: The Treaty of Paris is signed, ending the Spanish-American War.
1908: The 1908 Summer Olympics are held in London
1918: Dr. Karl Muck, music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is arrested under the Alien Enemies Act and imprisoned for the duration of WWI.
1928: The 1928 Summer Olympics are held in Amsterdam, opening with the lighting of the Olympic flame. Women's athletics and gymnastics debut at these games and discus thrower Halina Konopacka of Poland became the first female Olympic gold medal winner for a track or field event. Coca Cola enters Europe as sponsor of the games.
1938: Wrong Way Corrigan takes off from New York, ostensibly heading for California. He lands in Ireland instead.
1948: President of the United States Harry S. Truman signs the Marshall Plan, which authorizes $5 billion in aid for 16 countries.
1958: A peace symbol is designed and completed by Gerald Holtom, commissioned by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, in protest against the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment.
1968: Brazilian high school student Edson Luís de Lima Souto is shot by the police in a protest for cheaper meals at a restaurant for low-income students. The aftermath of his death was one of the first major events against the military dictatorship.
1978: Hollywood film director Roman Polanski skips bail and flees to France, after pleading guilty to charges of engaging in sex with a 13-year-old girl.
1988: A report by U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop states that the addictive properties of nicotine are similar to those of heroin and cocaine.
1998: Bear Grylls, 23, becomes the youngest British climber to scale Mount Everest
2002: The Open Skies mutual surveillance treaty, initially signed in 1992, officially enters into force.
