Martin Niemoeller was a Protestant pastor and he wrote this poem in 1939. The engraving reads:
"First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the communists
and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
Martin Niemoeller
Lutheran Pastor
This statement, attributed to Pastor Niemoeller, has become a legendary expression of the lesson of the Holocaust. Ironically, Niemoeller had delivered anti-Semitic sermons early in the nazi regime. He later opposed Hitler and was sent to a concentration camp."
