When the area of South Surrey / White Rock began to increase in population during the 1970s the existing two lane wood bridge over the Nicomekl River could not cope with the increasing traffic. By the end of the decade the Ministry of Transportation brought in this bailey bridge a temporary improvement. It allowed for two northbound lanes and one southbound lane.
Gradually the Ministry of Transportation did not feel this highway was important to the region, seeing it a more local road. It then opted to turn this bridge over to TransLink, the local region roading authority.
Eventually the route lost it's 'highway' designation moving from King George Highway to King George Boulevard, and yet this temporary bailey bridge continues to serve cars, buses, and trucks as the residents of South Surrey / White Rock commute to the rest of Metro Vancouver.
As to parking, there isn't any safe parking within 500 meters of this location. I approached the site by bicycle.
