The original plat for the town of Stephenson was filed in 1935 and the name changed to Rock Island in 1941. In 1940, when this multi-arch bridge was completed in 1940 the mayor of Rock Island, Robert Galbraith, suggested that the bridge be named the Rock Island Centennial Bridge to celebrate the city's founding rather than naming it after him as had been previously suggested.
