This old cemetery is not being used anymore, but is properly fenced and kept, so it's not abandoned either. Elias Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Dresden and it's considered culturally and historically the most important in the city.

It was created in the late 17th Century, when the plague hit Dresden, and it was used for about one century, with the last burial taking place in 1876. It survived the destructive bombings of the Second World War with a single hit, which wiped out the guardian house.

Currently there is an association of "friends" of the cemetery doing whatever is possible to keep the place in proper shape: (visit link)

Approximate number of tombs: 800 to 1000.
