This third bookmark in Project Bookmark Canada connects this location (St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church) with Bronwen Wallace's poem Mexican Sunsets.
The information board was unveiled by Joanne Page (Bronwen Wallace's friend (Ms. Wallace died in 1989)) and Kingston's Mayor Harvey Rosen on September 23, 2010.
The information board goes on to read:
"Mexican Sunsets" is from the collection Common Magic published in 1985. Like much of Wallace's writing, the poem uses a recognizable Kingston backdrop to make emphatic connections between neighbours, strangers and all humanity.
Here is an excerpt from the poem:
Nothing's the same anymore.
Here in Kingston, even limestone forgets itself
and the staid Protestant church towers
succumb to gothic fantasies, windows ablaze
with dragon's fire and the pink screams
of captured damsels; while the bare, old
branches of trees are elegant filigrees,
burnt black and delicate
by so much colour.
