This mural was painted in 1988, to help celebrate the Centennial of the town.
About the town:
Cosmopolis is the oldest city on Grays Harbor. It was established since a donation land claim was filed here in 1852 (it was incorporated in 1891). The city's name means "City of the world". At the beginning of the town, a brickyard was build in 1860, a tannery (1861), a grist mill (1879), a saw mill (Grays Harbor Mill Company, in 1888). Today the residents affectionately refer to the city as "Cosi".

February 25, 1855
In 1854, the U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs instructed Isaac I. Stevens, Governor of the Washington Territory, to enter into treaties with the Coast Indian tribes, following the initial council meeting hter in Cosmopolis. Treaty councils were held on the Quinault River in July, 1855 and in Olympia in January 1856. The treaty was eventually signed by Governor Stevens and Ta-Ho-Lah and How-Yatle, Chiefs of the Quinalts and Quillayute tribes. The treaty was ratified by the U.S. Senate in 1859. City of Cosmopolis
