"The turntable, from Petoskey, Michigan, enables a locomotive to be turned in a circle so that it can run in the opposite direction. Such turntables were usually located outside a "roundhouse" used for housing and repairing locomotives. On arrival, a locomotive was detached from its train, turned to its desired direction and headed either for a new destination or to the roundhouse for repair. Turntables are balanced so precisely that only two people are needed to turn the biggest and heaviest locomotives." Text Source: (
