This historical sign located within Old Sacramento reads:
NEW ENGLAND SEED STORE. On this site stood the store of James L. L. F. Warren, an influential center of agriculture during the Gold Rush. Here at the New England Seed Store, the camellia was first introduced into California in February, 1852. Camellia Official Flower of the City and County of SacramentoSTATE OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION DEDICATED JUNE 1989 |
There is a local chapter known as the Camellia Society of Sacramento that promotes this flower and contains a wonderful historical writeup on the history of this city flower here. I located a nice biography of L.L.F Warren here and I located an even better online article detailing Warren's life here in which he has been referred to as the “Father of California Agriculture.”
