I recovered this U.S. Geological Survey pipe cap from 1902 (my oldest benchmark find to-date) in good condition. The pipe cap's surface has been marred somewhat and the stamping is hard to read but is still legible. This cap is listed on a topography map as 'BM 310' and also has the elevation stamping of '309.747' as well as the designation stamping of '309 B' on the cap face. This pipe cap is also slightly tilted in the ground and could affect surveying methods. My posted coordinates will place you very close to this cap. The NGS datasheet info is adequate for station recovery.

RAILROAD FROM THE STATION, AT THE CRITTENDEN STREET CROSSING, 72.0 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE NORTHEAST RAIL OF THE MAIN TRACK, 57.0 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTER LINE OF MADISON STREET, 25.5 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE CENTER LINE OF CRITTENDEN STREET, 2.0 FEET SOUTH OF A TELEGRAPH POLE, ABOUT 2 FEET HIGHER THAN THE TRACKS, 1.8 FEET EAST OF A WITNESS POST, AND WELDED ON TOP OF A 3 1/2-INCH IRON PIPE PROJECTING 0.2 FOOT ABOVE THE GROUND.
