1885: A train wreck of the P.T. Barnum Circus kills giant elephant Jumbo.
1895: Mintonette, later known as volleyball, is created by William G. Morgan at Holyoke, Massachusetts.
1905: Penny post established between the United Kingdom and Australia
1915: The United States House of Representatives rejects a proposal to give women the right to vote.
1925: The inauguration of Calvin Coolidge as President of the United States becomes the first to be broadcast on radio.
1935: Bruno Richard Hauptmann is convicted and sentenced to death for the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh, Jr.
1945: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, a musical play based on Ferenc Molnár's Liliom, opens on Broadway and becomes their second long-running stage classic.
