Nelson celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1997. The city's centennial project was to build the Waterfront Walkway, a walking path which stretches from the Big Orange Bridge in the east past the airport in the west, a distance of close to two miles. Only about a third of the walkway is in the park.

Near the walkway are several plaques acknowledging both the city's centennial and the walkway project. The Rotarians placed this plaque, mounted on a granite boulder, next to the walkway at the western entrance to the park, which is in the south west corner of the park.
