Master Shipbuilder, Marlboro Packard, built this house in 1851. He and his wife, Mary, raised their children here. He was a prominent businessman, who helped drive the economy in Searsport in it's shipbuilding heyday.
To mark the sad occassion of Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865, Marlboro and his friend, Captain Nickels, planted a northern white cedar treee on the southeastern corner of the property. The was was struck down by lightening in 1999. A local artist, Rob Cowan, carved Marlboro Packard's face into the remaining trunk from a photograph of Mr. Packard, which can be viewed in the motel's office. The trunk was moved in 2004 to it's present location.
