Bolton Castle was built by Sir Richard le Scrope, Lord Chancellor of England under Richard II. Building commenced in 1379 and was completed in 1399. In 1536 Sir John Scrope supported a rebellion against Henry VIII’s religious reforms. Henry ordered the Castle to be torched. The damage inflicted was later repaired.

Bolton Castle housed Mary Queen of Scots for 6 months in 1568.
