Boundary pole where, Gemmenich and Sippenaken meet. Before there was an oaktree over here. De Geul is the border between Belgium and the Netherlands for approximately 10 meters at this location.
from N 50 45.425 E005 56.146 you will see at the other side of the river boundary pole no.9
This boundary pole between Vaals and Sippenaeken is also at the border of the river 'De Geul'
Belgium became independent in 1831, but it took until 1839 before the Dutch king William 1 consented to the separation of Belgium.
In 1843 the so-called convention of Maastricht was signed, whereby the border was determined definitively. In implementation of the Convention iron boundary markers were placed in the same year between the "Drielandenpunt" in Vaals (pole no. 1) and the coast near Retranchement (pole no. 365). A landmarks commission annually monitors the quality of the boundary posts and border changes.
