The Bethel Hebron Cemetery had its start with the Bethel German Communal Colony beginning in the 1840s. The location of the cemetery was chosen because the ground was not suitable for farming. The original graves were marked with walnut markers which no longer exist. Beginning 1850s the colonist's graves were marked with limestone markers. About 100 from the commune were buried in the cemetery After the commune was dissolved in the 1870s the cemetery continued to be used by the community. The northern portion of the cemetery has more modern polished granite stones. The cemetery has a few hundred graves though it is hard to say because of those that are unmarked. The cemetery had left in disrepair for several years until 1975 when Bethel Cemetery Association began maintaining it.
