The Heroes Memorial
This memorial is believed to be the only such memorial on a post-secondary campus in the United States of America dedicated both to the September 11, 2001 events as well as the military conflicts of both Iraq and Afghanistan.
The placement and construction of this memorial seemed proper to both students and staff at the University of Pittsburgh at Jonnstown, simply because many of the military casualties were college-aged students, the ages of their student populous.
About the Ground-Zero Artfact
At the Center of The Heroes Memorial is a 3,500 pound of steel I-beam from the World Trade Center surrounded by the names of the more than 3,000 victims of September 11 as well as the names and ages of 1,729 members of the US military killed in Afghanistan and the 4,456 soldiers killed in Iraq through August 22, 2011. The steel structure was donated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A special bronze plaque, placed at the artifact base, recognizes the donor and pays tribute to the victims.
