Jefferson Methodist Church is the oldest standing church building and one of the oldest buildings of any kind in the City of Jefferson. It is virtually unchanged since its construction in 1871 other than the 1954 addition of a service wing to the building's north side.

The church was built at a cost of $1,004.66 with lumber obtained from a local mill owned by Absalom Smith, a member of the congregation. The wooden pews still used at the time of attaining National Landmark status also were constructed at Smith's mill.

When submitted to the National Register in 1980, this landmark also included a parsonage, built in 1891. However, in the years immediately prior to listing, the parsonage was no longer in use for it's original purpose but instead serving as a rental property. In September 1983, the parsonage was torn down and at the present time, a small community garden occupies the site.

The structure is a traditional Protestant meeting house in the Classic Revival style and has been in continuous use since its completion in 1871.
