Botolph was a Saxon saint of travellers. The dedication to this saint suggests that there was probably a wooden church before the Norman Conquest on this, the highest point in Shepshed.
Shepshed is listed in the Doomsday Book as a large village with a mill. The Manor of Shepshed was given to Odo, the Bishop of Bayeux, a brother of William the Conqueror.
In early 2008 a substantial re-ordering project took place at a cost of just over £200,000.
It is now possible to appreciate a lot of the historical features that were not previously so clearly accessible.
The stone font had a new cover made after WW1 with a dedication round its edge in memory of the Sunday School Scholars who died.
