This historic railroad station was built for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1918, the third depot built at this location. Two previous stations were located at this same site, the first built in 1871, replaced in 1889. The smaller building immediately south of the main station (seen at the right in the default photo) is an older depot/baggage shed, awaiting restoration, and is a salvaged remnant of the 1889 station. It was built originally located about 100 feet to the north and was turned 180 degrees.

The buff-colored brick, Beaux Arts style station has been in continuous use since it was completed. It replaced the 1889 station which burned down the day before the U.S. entered World War I in 1917. This is one of just five masonry station buildings that remain along the original Southern Pacific rail line. In 2000, the Oregon Department of Transportation completed a restoration project.

The station continues to provide service to Salem through the Amtrak Coast Starlight and Cascades trains, serving about 66,000 passengers annually.
