A 6' high by 1.5' by 1.5' granite sculpture of a Union soldier, by an unknown artist, is depicted looking straight ahead while standing at parade rest. The soldier is wearing a cap, knee length coat and cape. He is wearing a kit attached to his belt on the right side of his back. He is holding a rifle vertically in front with both hands on the barrel, left over right. The butt of the rifle and his left foot extends over the edge of the granite plinth.

The multi-tiered granite base is 10' high by 6' square. A GAR logo is engraved in the rounded gable near the top on all four sides. The front of the base is inscribed is raised capital letters:

CONN. G.A.R.
A.D. 1884.

The bottom of the base is inscribed in incised capital letters:

FRATERNITY,
