Westfield State University was founded in 1838 by educator Horace Mann. It started as the Westfield Normal School for training teachers. They became Westfield State Teachers College in 1932. In 1968, it became Westfield State college and then Westfield State University in 2010.
Recently, Westfield State created a new Office of International Education to foster partnerships with similar institutions around the world in order to expand international study and exchange opportunities. The new world globe installed in the center of the campus is a symbol of this new focus of the University. The globe is a 20' diameter hollow steel armillary sphere with the landmasses depicted in copper with mountain ranges roughly outlined in green. The globe is accurately tilted at a 23 degree angle from the vertical.
