This sign is one of a group of history signs about the Historic Taft District and is located along SW 51st Street.
Marker Name: 1939 - Stormy Weather
Marker Text: Siletz Bay has always felt the brunt of extreme weather, especially from southerly winds combined with the high tides of winter. This storm all but washed away Pacific Avenue (now 51st Street) and did serious damage to the Taft dock. The first wooden seawall was built in the 1920s and a more substantial one in the early 1940s.
Large logs are deposited here every year from high water, gale force winds and flooding upriver, although there are fifty percent fewer logs left on the beaches now due to changes in the lumber industry.
