Kreuz Market began life in 1900 in the location now occupied by Smitty's Market, off the town square. In 1999, there was a parting of the ways between family members, leaving one group to establish Smitty's Market at the original location, and the other to build a new, bigger building for Kreuz Market up the road. They pronounce the name as "krites."
This is one of the Big Three barbecue joints in Lockhart, and is generally near the top of "Best of Texas BBQ" lists (and was in Texas Monthly's Top 50 in 2008 and 2013). There is plenty of parking in front of the building, giving visitors a glimpse of the enormous amount of firewood used in their smokers.
Being Texas barbecue, beef is king here, with a choice of lean (shoulder) or fatty (brisket) meat. They also serve sausage (regular or jalapeño cheese), pork chops, pork ribs, prime rib, and smoked turkey. Friday and Saturday visitors will see smoked ham and beef ribs added to the menu. One can purchase bulk sausage to take home and prepare later. For the uninitiated, the routine is this: At the pit, tell the kind folks there what you'd like and how much of it. They'll slice it up for you and wrap it up in butcher paper. Behind you is a door into the main dining area (which is air conditioned), where you can get drinks, beans, and other fixins at a low price. Beer and bottled soft drinks, including RC Cola, are available. If you leave enough room for dessert, they also serve up ice cream.

To eat on the cheap, just don't order a whole lot, and while there's no "pig out" meal per se, there's no reason why you can't return to the pit and order more. Of course, they'll provide you with the means to take any of your leftovers home with you.
There are some signs around the place that suggest that they take a dim view of folks asking for sauce or forks. I've never encountered anybody being read the riot act about this, but I've heard plenty of tales. If you want sauce or forks, bring your own. There are plenty of napkins and sinks for those of us who use our built-in utensils.
