The Oregon School for the Deaf was established in 1870 and educates deaf and hard of hearing students up to age 18. Since 1987, the school has also operated the "Nightmare Factory," a haunted house the school runs as a fundraiser each October. In 2010, the TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" featured an episode where the show's cast provided an update to the "Nightmare Factory" and a new boys' dormitory, as both structures had become unsafe.
