Completed in 1914, the Oregon State Supreme Court building is the oldest building in Oregon still in use by state government. There are three floors and the court chambers are on the top floor. The marble structure features Ionic columns and was designed by noted architect
William C. Knighton, who also designed the
Deepwood Estate.
Before completion of the
State Library Building in 1939, the state library was located in the basement of the Supreme Court Building. This building was connected to the
old State Capitol Building by tunnels and so the library collected was damaged by the water that drained into the basement through the tunnels in the effort to save the burning Capitol.
