The Wynoochee Cemetery is owned by the City of Montesano, Washington, and was originally called Mound Cemetery which was th pioneer's name for the hill where the cemetery is located (Mace's Mound). The cemetery first opened in April 1871 when two acres were purchased at $10 per acre, and that same afternoon the first interrment occurred whn Mrs Frances Redman Luark was buried. In May of that same year, at a meeting at the schoolhouse, additional lots were sold for $5 each, and in June of that year, the graves of those who had been buried near the Methodist Church and the schoolhouse were moved to the new cemetery.
