Gold Coast Airport, originally named Coolangatta Airport, is located 25 kilometres south of the main centre Surfer's Paradise and 100 kilometres south of the state capital Brisbane. The airport officially straddles the state border between Queensland and New South Wales, but for administrative purposes is considered wholly in the former.
The airport consists of two north-south runways. Large commercial airliners use the 2.5 kilometre 14/32 runway, while small aircraft use the 580 metre 17/35 runway. The terminal was last upgraded in 2010.
According to the Australian Department of Transport and Infrastructure it is the sixth busiest airport in terms of passengers and eighth in aircraft movements. It is also the third fastest growing airport in the country.
The airport services a number of regional, national and international carriers, including Qantas, Air Jetstar, Virgin Australia, New Zealand, AirAsiaX, Scoot, Tiger and SEAIR Pacific.
Most tourists come from the southern Australian states of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, with the biggest influx of international arrivals coming from New Zealand, Malaysia and Japan.
