Denmar State Hospital
Established as Denmar Sanitarium in 1938 as a state site to treat African Americans with tuberculosis. Location considered ideal at 2,200 feet above sea level, overlooking the Greenbrier River. Act of the Legislature in 1957 changed to Denmar State Hospital for the chronically ill. Closed in 1990; converted to a correctional facility in 1993. A number of patients who died here are interred in nearby cemetery.
