This rectangular wood frame structure was built in 1841 and along with the adjacent Jason Lee house, pre-dates the establishment of the American Provisional Government in 1843 and us among the oldest wooden buildings that remain in the Pacific Northwest.

The building is connected with the Methodist-founded Indian Manual Labor Training School, forerunner to nearby Willamette University. It was used as a parsonage by the school's director, Rev. Gustave Hines, and also served as a temporary classroom.

The house originally stood at approximately the location of the water tower for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill but according to the 1974 historic nomination form was moved "some time ago."
