Liberty Baptist is an old church in downtown Evansville, IN. It is located at the corner of Oak St and 7th St.
Liberty is said to be the first African-American church in Evansville, originally organized in 1865, just after the end of the Civil War. Many southern slaves migrated from the south with Evansville being the destination.
The church building was destroyed a few times. The current building was erected in 1887.
The area around the church was known as Baptisttown at one point, as it was a primary moving spot for the slave immigrants.
