Next to a World War I doughboy sculpture is this tablet, inscribed: "World War I, April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918" along with the words of John McCrae's famous poem "In Flanders Fields."

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

"In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; in the sky
the larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."

John McCrae was a Canadian physician and soldier who penned "In Flanders Fields" on May 3, 1915, in the field following the funeral of a friend who died at the Second Battle of Ypres. The poem inspired "remembrance poppies" as a symbol of soldiers who have died in battle. The poem remains one of Canada's most famous literary works.
