History of Man Sun Clock - New York, NY
[edit]
in Town Clocks
A very interesting limestone bas relief sculpture is located on the south side of 45 Rockefeller Plaza. It is the creation of sculptor Lee Lawrie. The work consists of an array of 12 images in a 4 row by 3 column format. The images include a reclining male figure , a grouping of three figures, a grouping of four figures, a sailing ship, four buildings, an eagle, a bird above waves of water, palm trees, and a lion.
At the top of the colorful relief is a clock which represents the sun. The Art Deco style clock has a maroon background which is devoid of numerals and bronze hands. It is surrounded by a gold zig-zag pattern and a triple gold circle. Rays of sunlight are pouring down from a clock. The sunlight is flanked by stars outlined in gold.
Rockefeller Center is a complex of nineteen buildings covering 22 acres between 48th and 51st Streets and 5th and 6th Avenues. Construction of the original 14 Art Deco style buildings began on May 17, 1930 and was completed in 1939. The complex is enhanced with many important and famous Art Deco works of art.
