Originally known as Odd Fellows Rural Cemetery, this burial grounds, established in 1841, is now more than 170 years old. Buried here are many prominent early residents including William H. Willson, who donated much of the land that now comprises Salem's downtown, his wife Chloe Clark Willson, founder of the Oregon Institute (later became Willamette University), Asahel Bush, founder of the Oregon Statesman newspaper (now the Statesman Journal) and namesake of Bush's Pasture Park and John Pollard Gaines, Oregon Territorial Governor from 1850 to 1853.

The cemetery is adjacent to City View Cemetery.
