It's unlikely that you'll come across a larger compressor than this one in the next few days. It's driven by a 602 horse power, 2,000 volt electric motor driving a 24 foot diameter, 25 ton flywheel. The cranks weigh 12 tons and the driving rope (in lieu of a belt) is a half mile long.

The compressor was used to supply air to the mine's drills, and was capable of driving 40 of them simultaneously. The compressor is a hybrid of two different compressors, made by The Ingersoll Company and the Canadian Rand Company. This compressor (or parts of it) were in service in various places from 1900 until 1971.

The compressor, the electric motors, a DC Generator and the three phase transformers are on the grounds of the museum but there is no charge to view it. One can even get up close and personal with the machinery.
