The Grand Canal was originally terminated at St. James Gate. Its extension to Ringsend Docks and the sea lock there was build in 1791 and it is called Circular Line after the South Circular Road.

The bridge was named after Turner Camac, a director of the Grand Canal Company (not the Camac River which crosses Grand Canal by an underground tunnel few kilometers to the west).
