Wiebbe Hayes (born 1608) was a colonial soldier from Winschoten, Netherlands, part of the armed guard on the Batavia when she struck Morning Reef off Geraldton in 1629. Whilst Francisco Pelsaert and the ship skipper Adriaen Jacobsz sailed for help in the ship's longboat he led a group of soldiers, sailors and other survivors of the shipwreck against the murderous mutineers led by Jeronimus Cornelisz until Pelsaert returned four months later to the Houtman Abrolhos Islands (Wallabi Group), off the Western Australian coastline
Hayes is credited with building the oldest known European-built structure in Australia, a stone fort which still stands.

The life size statue is cast bronze standing on a limestone plinth,he is brandishing a home-made pike and is wearing 17th century dutch clothing
