A handbill advertising the Medford Glass Works for public sale in l887 reveals that, with the exception of the factory buildings, the company town existed then much as it does today. Many of the 22 workers houses are neatly kept homes today. In the l9th century, the houses were heated by corner fireplaces supplied with water from 3 outdoor wells, and lighted by candles because kerosene lanterns attracted insects from the nearby swamp (now Medford Park). These homes originally sold for about $500 and rented for $6 a month. Factory families kept to themselves, and their lives were very different from life in Medford Village.
