A follow-up to the A-20 "Havoc", the A-26 made its first flight on July 10, 1942. Delivery began in 1943 and a year later, in November of 1944, it went into combat over Europe. It was used for level bombing, ground strafing, and rocket attacks. By the end of production in 1944, 2,502 invaders had been built. In 1948 the A-26 was redesignated the B-26. The B-26 saw combat in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. In Korea it served as a night intruder, attacking North Korean supply lines. In Vietnam, 40 modified B-26B's were used for special air warfare missions. These aircraft were designated B-26K. Later, these aircraft were redesignated A-26A.
