The F-86D, known briefly as the YF-95A, made its first flight on December 22, 1949. It was developed as an all-weather interceptor version of the famed F-86A. The F-86D was used during the 1950's both in the U.SD. and overseas to guard against possible air attack. This fighter was the first to employ the "flying tail" by which the entire horizontal stabilizer could be rotated to control ascent and descent. The flying tail gave much quicker maneuverability to the aircraft. The F-86 was called a "second generation" jet fighter because its wings were swept back to delay onset of the compressibility of the air. A total of 2,054 F-86's were built, 981 of which were converted from D to L models.
