This is the main border crossing between Grenzach and Basel and the only one suitable for cars.
It is located in the west of Grenzach; the German territory has a thin bulge at this location with borders to Switzerland in the north as well as in the south, but in the north there is a steep hill and in the south the river. The name Grenzach looks like there was the German word for "border" (Grenze) in it, but it evolved from the name of an Ancient Roman village at this location, called "Carantiacum".
The Swiss part of the border crossing is located on the soil of the municipality Riehen, but this is a small stripe of maybe 30 meters that ends at the other side of the street, where the city of Basel officially begins.
