Cache Valley
First called Willow Valley, Cache Valley took its name from the trappers' practice of "caching" furs along the banks of its streams.
Cut by numerous rivers, Cache Valley was not only a favorite trapping area of the mountain men, but also served as winter grounds & rendezvous site.
Near the Hyrum townsite (2 miles southeast of here) the Second Rendezvous (1826) of W.H. Ashley's Rocky Mountain Fur Co. was held. Perhaps 100 men gathered to trade pelts & make revelry. From that site Jedediah S. Smith set out on his history making expedition to Calif. He returned (1827) having crossed Utah north to south & west to east.
From Cache Valley in 1825 Jim Bridger traveled down Bear River to discover Great Salt Lake.
White Settlement began (1856) at Wellsville to the West of this site.
